Believed to have begun during the Heian
period, this is the only type of man-powered
ferry operating in Aichi prefecture today.
The ferry is caused to move by the boatman
thrusting a barge pole into the water. The
ferry crosses back and forth along the span
of Toyogawa River near the Toyohashi Sozo
College, and forms a major artery between
Ushikawa town, which neighbors Omura town.
Knocking the plank of wood at the jetty will
signal the boatman. The ferry is operated
free of charge by Toyohashi City.
